Will CatchIts make me drop the ball more?
If you have poor catching technique then wearing CatchIts may cause you to drop more ball at first however this will quickly change once you adapt to using your fingers. Like anything new, it may feel odd at first but this means it’s doing you good by correcting a bad habit.
I don’t drop the ball much – how will CatchIts help me?
Training is a controlled environment and is different to the pressure experienced in a game situation. Even if you catch well at training you may not be using the correct technique so when you’re under pressure, any fault in your technique could jeopardise your ability to hold onto the ball. Practising the correct technique by using CatchIts at training will make fingertip control second nature when under pressure in a game.
If I don’t like wearing CatchIts should I just take them off?
CatchIts have been designed for maximum ergonomic comfort so wearing them should not be a source of discomfort. However if you don’t like wearing them because they feel strange when you catch the ball or they cause you to fumble then this means you are learning something new and at first it’s feeling strange. If this is the case then it’s likely that you’ll benefit the most from wearing CatchIts because you may be using your palms to catch the ball and are just experiencing an adjustment to your technique. So to answer your question, no you shouldn’t take them off. You should continue to wear your CatchIts until you consistently catch the ball cleanly with them on. Further to this, you should continue using CatchIts at every session to prevent bad habits returning.
My CatchIts are making me fumble the ball at training. Why is this?
This is most probably because you are used to catching the ball with the palm of your hands and now your CatchIts are preventing this from happening. The fumbling will subside quickly as you adjust your technique to using your fingertips. After that, fingertip control will become second nature.
My coach gave me CatchIts to wear at training. Does this mean I’m a bad catcher?
CatchIts can sometime identify someone with poor handling even if it isn’t apparent at first. Some coaches use CatchIts to identify players who catch with their palms because it makes them fumble the ball. As we often say, you can get away with poor technique at training but in a game, it can let you down at the worst possible moment. By using CatchIts to identify players with suspect handling skills, this part of their game can be greatly improved.
CatchIts help me catch with my fingertips at training but how does this help me in a game?
The old saying ‘Perfect practice makes perfect results’ explains how CatchIts will help you in a game. As you practice catching the ball with your fingertips, you are establishing a habit. Scientifically speaking, you are establishing a neurological pathway between your hands and your brain that makes you consciously think about using your hands at first and then subconsciously you will do the same thing once the CatchIts are removed. It’s as if you’ve trained your mind to make you use your fingers.
As a coach, will CatchIts help me identify players with handling issues?
Absolutely. Those players with poor technique will most likely have the greatest difficulties initially as they adjust to the correct technique.
How do CatchIts help with general handling?
Firstly, by improving catching CatchIts will reduce the moments required for ball adjustment after a poor quality catch before a player moves the ball on. These split seconds of adjustment can make all the difference in slowing the ball down or creating mishandling errors. In addition, players are more likely to practice drills with the ball in two hands, again speeding up passing options.
